As part of my university Audio-Visual essay module, I was tasked to create an AV essay on a film of my choosing. The film I chose was Todd Haynes', Safe (1995). When I first watched Safe on Mubi, I was compelled by the unnerving atmosphere that looms over the characters and locations. In this video essay, I aim to demonstrate how director Todd Haynes creates this distinct atmosphere, and how the film provides a metaphorical commentary on a variety of social and historical contexts.
